Hat Soiree
At Plumage Millinery, we feel you are never too young or too old to wear a hat! A hat can provide the grand finale to any outfit.

We have Marie Antoinette to thank for starting the fashion for using feathers in hats. Ostrich plumes have been a favourite hat trim since medieval times originally decorating men's helmets. Plumes were traditionally worn on the left side as a token of love.

Did You Know?

Early in the 1920's trends in fashion changed dramatically. Women threw off the restraints of long, upswept hair in favour of an easier, chin-length "bob". This brought an end to combs, pins and hair jewellery in general. The fashionable "bob" was styled in Paris by Antoine. This was followed by a new design, the "cloche", out of the shops at Maison Reboux, created by placing a felt hood directly on a woman's head and trimming with scissors around the face and neck then tucking and wrapping the sides with grosgrain ribbon held together by glittering jewels. Thus a new shape was created. Traditional hat lining was replaced by grosgrain ribbon headbands; a trend that continues to this day.
